Cat 5-14-02 to 1-6-10
Fearless, Loyal, Kind
I had been looking for the “perfect dog” for sometime. I was training on a hard to handle dog, Bet, owned by Charles Mullinax. She could do anything, but was very tough. I had also trained and ran (old) Scout in trials, did not officially own him either. He was very nice to handle. Both were excellent cattle dogs, with excellent bloodlines. I thought if I could cross the two of them, I could possibly get the perfect dog – and I did – Cat.
The day I brought Cat home, at 6 weeks old, she was already walking up on sheep and chickens, using her strong eye. I started her training around 4 months on stock, she was a pleasure to train, never requiring tough corrections. She wanted to please. She would work any kind of livestock, sheep, cattle, ducks, even chickens. Ducks were her favorite though, she LOVED ducks.
Cat was fearless, I never saw her afraid of anything, until the day she died, when she was in labor. She would face the toughest cow, knowing she may not physically be strong enough to fight it, but she would not back down. There was never a job to big or difficult for Cat to try. She was never the “quirky” type of Border Collie. Nothing bother her, noises, thunder, new things, she was good with what ever came her way. She was also an excellent rat hunter!
Cat was a kind dog. She never met anyone or another animal that she did not like (except for rats!) She was friendly with everyone, but work always came first to her. She was kind to the sheep and chickens. She knew they were my pets and she always made sure to never scare them, they trusted her.
I never saw Cat unhappy. She could make the best out of any situation. I have never had a Border Collie that I got along with better or that suited me better. She was one of a kind. I will always treasure the memories and accomplishments we had. I was very lucky to have her in my life for 7 years.
Her accomplishments include winning several open cattle trials, placing in numerous sheep and cattle trials. She placed in the top twenty in the 2005 National Cattle Dog Finals, and she was the 2009 Sunbelt Expo American Grand Finals Overall Sheep and Cattle Champion. She has also been my number one farm hand for many years.
I will miss her very much!
